Cerita Merdeka & Hari Malaysia

This is a story about honesty. About friendships. About life in Malaysia and how blessed I am to be a Malaysian. I love my country in all her flaws and imperfections, but it is perfect for me.

Story #1: The lost and return

On Merdeka day, I lost my purse at The Mines, most probably at the baby changing room because I was in a hurry to go to the toilet. After changing Khadeeja and strapping her to the stroller, my husband showed up and I hurriedly asked him to 'look after stuffs' and went off to the toilet.

Yes, yes, I know. This is my second time losing my purse. Perhaps because I'm not working now (hence hardly paying out of my own purse!), I have become careless when it comes to looking after this one possession which used to be so precious to me.

Then again, there's the tedious process of replacing all my bank cards, my student card and most importantly my identification card and Khadeeja's. Darn. Nowadays citizens who lost their Mykad have to pay penalty of RM100 for each time they lost their Mykad. I've lost mine for the second time, so that means I have to pay RM200. Plus Khadeeja's Mykid. So that's RM300+ just to get a new Mykad and Mykid. That's excluding my driving license (RM20, plus I have to take photos for the new license), my bank cards (RM12 each to get new ATM cards), and… what with the new semester coming up next week. Serve me right for being careless!

Right away, I blocked my ATM cards and credit cards. So it was just a matter of making a police report so I could proceed to JPN to get new Mykad. Everything revolved around Mykad. My bank cards could only be issued once I have Mykad. I could only pay my semester fee once I have my credit card. Can you see the link here? Pfft.

So today, as I hurriedly got ready to go out to make a police report, my phone (thank God I didn't keep it in my purse!) rang. It was Khayla's teacher. I answered the call and breathlessly told her I was in a hurry so could I return her call later? She quickly cut me and said, 'No, no. I'm not talking about Khayla. I just want to ask whether you've lost your purse at The Mines yesterday? Because a Malay guy called me up and said he found your purse and wants to return it to you.'

I was elated! So this evening, we met up at Putrajaya and the guy came with his family (wife and two young sons). He gave me the purse with everything intact. According to him, he saw the purse at the changing table, and was in a dilemma whether to leave it there (thinking that maybe we would realise it missing and come back to the room again), or to keep it safe. He finally opted for the second decision as he noticed the purse contained Mykad and Mykid, which would be dangerous should it fall in the wrong hands. He also tried calling all the numbers he could find in the purse (the membership cards, not so helpful unfortunately), and finally found a receipt from Khayla's school, which is how he ended up calling u Khayla's teacher.

We strongly insisted to give duit raya to their sons (which they strongly refused but somehow we won). They did not expect us to give them anything for their honesty.

Terima kasih En Mohd Faizal, kerana masih lagi meyakinkan kami bahawa rakyat Malaysia masih ada yang jujur dan amanah :)

Story #2: Lunch date with Mr & Mrs Chen

It's been more than a year ago since we last met at the hospital where I was being treated for severe dehydration due to morning sickness. My dear friend, Jen was also pregnant and suffering from morning sickness but she came nonetheless, the two of us miserable with our pregnancy state. Hehe.

Fast-forward a year later, she has arranged for a lunch date together, to meet each other's little ones who were responsible for our sorry state back then :p Khadeeja and Wei Ying were born only 3 days apart but they were so different in terms of size! Khadeeja were the more petite one, weighing only 6kg+ because she can't keep still and forever moving around, while Wei Ying is a healthy 9kg 8 months old.

We had our lunch date at Lazis restaurant in Mont' Kiara. In a Middle East restaurant, a Chinese couple and a Malay couple sat together having lunch and catching up on each other's news. Later, our kids played together and laughed with each other:

At the end of the lunch date, Wei Jiun asked his mom whether he could follow Khayla in our car. Hahaha! The innocence of a small boy…

We may be different in skin colour, race, culture and religion but we agree that our kids are lovely and the nasi briyani (which was their treat this time!) was simply delicious!

Story #3: Meeting My University Best Friend

A couple of weeks ago my best friend was in KL so I decided to spend the day with her, doing girly stuffs which I had not done for a long, long time!

We had lunch, then shopped (me for my baby's stuff, she for a lot of people in her family including herself!) and finally ended up in i-City, camwhoring like crazy:

Over delicious tea at SACC Mall, we discussed about how her marriage to a Catholic guy will shape her kids' life (whether they will be baptised and raised as Anglican Christian in their mother's faith, or her husband's). Later at the hotel (she begged us to stay over since her room is really huge!), she offered a place for us to pray, but we declined out of respect even though there is a sign showing the qiblat direction in the room.

There is no such things as taboo, because we respect each other's religion, and we understand where our similarity in faith meets, and where it ends.

Dear Allah,

Thank you for making me a Malaysian, for giving me the opportunity to meet multi-racial friends, for surrounding me with honest people, and for the peace and little pleasures that we more often than not, taken for granted.

Alhamdulillah. May the common things among us precede our differences, and our differences complement rather than be a source of dispute among us.

Makan-makan Again!

Oops. I thought the makan-makan at Kak Retna's place was the last entry about Raya, but apparently it was not! Out of the blue, hubby decided to host this year's open house at the very last minute, itu pun after Syawal ended :P Err… makan je lah!

This time we decided to do it on smaller scale though, unlike the one we did last year. Orang kata, sekadar cukupkan syarat je. My hubby's boss has been nagging him about having one, so he also nagged me about cooking for the open house until I said, ok la. Do la.

Since we are having friends and neighbours over for the open house, I invited my dearest friend, Jen and her family as well. Jen has been enjoying some freedom (probably because she complaint a lot in our Whatsapp conversation about how she can't go out during weekend with her kids no thanks to her hubby blablabla, and guess what, she is using her hubby's handphone to Whatsapp some more hahahahha!) and she was more than happy to come so our kids could play with each other again.

For this open house event, my mom and I prepared a new, never-been-served before dish called 'mi belacan', which is a cross of yong tau fu and kangkong belacan. I was also super rajin and baked a few cookies and chocolate cupcakes, which I decorated with icing with the help of Khayla:

After some guests left, we changed the kids' clothes to their swimsuits and brought them to the pool. Khayla initially refused to swim on her own, but when she saw us clapping at Wei Jiun's first time effort swimming on his own, she dived right in and swam towards him! Same thing happened when WJ was eating a cupcake, Khayla came up and even asked for a cupcake. The power of peer pressure! Hahahaha!

G.E.N.G. K.A.M.I.E - The Eid Feast

One of the great things about Eid celebration in Malaysia is it can last for the whole month, equivalent to the number of days we fast during Ramadhan. It's nothing to do with religious obligation, it's just we Malaysians will find any excuse to feast on mouth-watering dishes especially when they are FREE! But more importantly, that's how we bond with each other. Over succulent lemang and scrumptious cookies, we catch up with each others' lives and share juicy gossips as juicy as the tender chicken rendang because this kind of opportunity rarely presents itself during other non-festive months where everybody is busy with their own career.

Likewise, our bunch of friends (fondly known as Geng Kamie) are also finding this the perfect excuse to meet again and celebrate Eid together. To tell the truth, the initial plan was just to have a simple tea of banana fritters or cucur ikan bilis at Kak Retna's place, while we help to finish her Hari Raya cookies (or what's left of them).

So last Sunday at 4pm, right after attending our neighbour's open house event, we straightaway drove to her place with a container-full of piping hot anchovy fritters (cucur ikan bilis) that we almost burnt in our hurry to reach her place (which is just 10 minutes away!) and some cookies that our neighbour gave. Little did we expect that Kak Ret, Kak Diella and Sodep went all out to prepare all these yummy dishes for us:

In fact, when we came, they were still busy cooking so while waiting, we watched TV while Khadeeja busied herself with some new toys that actually belong to Kak Retna's nephews:

At 9pm, we decided that was it for the day. Apatah lagi, since Sodep launched into ghost stories (The Conjuring and Mama, and he can really tell a story sampai laki aku mengigau malam tu!), and we don't exactly feel like driving back with extra 'passenger'. Hahahaha!

Cerita Raya (Bahagian Akhir)

Hari Raya keempat, kami balik ke kampung Suami Terchenta di Kampung Meranek, Samarahan, Kuching Sarawak.

Sepatutnya bertolak pukul 7 pagi lagi sebab dari kampung aku (Igan) ke Kuching ambik masa 10 jam gak la. Tapi akhirnya bertolak pukul 9.30 pagi sebab ada miscommunication sikit (Suami Terchenta salah dengar - Pak Su kata pukul 7, dia dengar pukul 10!). Tapi memang kalau ada budak kecik, susah sikit nak bertolak awal pagi. Sebab tu kalau boleh kiteorg memang tak penah ambik flight awal pagi walaupun lagi murah sebab dah penah merasa kena tinggal flight gara-gara lambat nak siapkan anak kecik!

Berbalik ke perjalanan 10 jam. Lama tak? Kalau korang rasa lama, kiteorang yang travel dengan budak-budak kecik ni rasa laaaaagiiiii lama! Flight 2 jam je pun dah rasa jenuh nak melayan budak-budak ni terutama Khadeeja, apa lagi 10 jam! Baru setengah jam dalam kereta, dia dah melalak sebab bosan tak boleh bergerak sangat. Khayla pulak rilek je main iPad. Terpaksa la kami berdua bergilir-gilir meriba dan layan dia. Penat!

Dalam perjalanan, sempat lagi singgah di rumah Pak Lang di Sibu (kami panggil Long Unus, jangan tanya apsal panggil 'Long' pulak, bukan 'Lang').

Keluar dari kereta je, Khayla dengan Khadeeja jadi macam kanak-kanak Ribena. Riang tak hengat dunia sebab dah bebas! Bila nampak kucing kat rumah tu, bertambah syok la dieorang sampai tak nak naik kereta balik:

Dari Sibu, kami teruskan perjalanan dan singgah di Betong untuk pergi toilet dan isi minyak. Ingat nak singgah makan tengahari jugak tapi tak jumpa pulak kedai makan orang Islam. Mungkin tutup sebab ramai yang masih nak beraya kot. Pukul 8 malam barulah kami sampai di kampung Suami Terchenta. Badan aku dah sakit-sakit sebab melayan dua-beradik dalam kereta! 3 hari baru hilang sakit badan, tu pun aku kena makan Panadol dulu baru beransur pulih.

Kat kampung Suami Terchenta tak banyak sangat agenda kami sebab masa tu ramai yang dah start bekerja so kami cuma berkesempatan melawat sanak-saudara terdekat je - nenek Suami Terchenta, Mak Ngah, sepupu rapat Suami Terchenta sebab wife dia baru je deliver anak kedua dan jugak sepupu aku yang baru lepas eksiden tu.

Syukur masa eksiden tu, Aqmal dengan atok dan nenek dia. Cuma abang dia, Aqil je yang ada dalam kereta, tu pun dia duduk dalam baby car seat sambil pakai tali pinggang keledar. Wife sepupu agak teruk sebab masa eksiden tu dia tak pakai tali pinggang keledar gara-gara nak bancuh susu untuk Aqil. Sebab tu la aku memang pantang bab safety ni, kalau naik kereta mesti akan pastikan anak-anak aku duduk dalam car seat. Biarlah Khayla dan Khadeeja meraung tak nak duduk dalam car seat, aku tetap bertegas sebab malang tak berbau kan? Aku buat pekak je la masa driving. Hehe. Sampaikan Suami Terchenta sanggup bawak car seat dari KL balik ke Sarawak semata-mata sebab kena travel jauh dari Igan ke Kuching!

Selain dari tu ada jugak la buat sesi makan-makan kat rumah Pak Long aku memandangkan dia dan adik sepupu yang seorang lagi tu tak balik beraya di Igan tahun ni. Sempat jugak kami bersiar-siar di The Summer, shopping mall terbaru di Kuching sebab dekat sangat dengan kampung husband. Harus la menjengok jugak kan!

Kami kat kampung husband dari hari Ahad sampai Selasa. Rabu, kami dah fly balik - aku ke Bintulu dan Suami Terchenta balik ke KL. Kali ni dalam flight adik yang tido nyenyak dan terjaga bila nak landing, kakak pulak yang hyper tapi bila nak sampai dia boleh tido pulak. Hish budak-budak ni...

Nasib baik bila aku kejutkan Khayla, dia tak mengamuk walaupun mula-mula dia marah sebab aku kata dah sampai. Tapi bila aku sebut 'Makyeng is waiting for us', dia terus capai teddy bear dan jalan ke tangga sambil kata, 'Let's go home, mak. Bring bag, mak.' Baik betul anak aku yang seorang ni, tak menyusahkan aku langsung.

Tapi yang tak syoknya sementara tunggu mak aku sampai, boleh pulak dia terkencing depan kedai kat airport tu! Rupa-rupanya pampers dia dah penuh sangat masa dalam flight sampai bocor. Nak marah pun tak guna so terpaksa la sambil sorong beg dan dukung Khadeeja aku bawak dia pegi tandas untuk salin baju dan buang pampers. Hmm.

Sejak balik Sarawak dia dah terbiasa dengan pampers yang bapak dia pakaikan sebab malas nak bawak dia pegi tandas bila beraya di rumah orang. Lagi satu toilet kat kampung Suami Terchenta pulak jenis yang mencangkung tapi Khayla cuma reti 'shee-shee' kat toilet duduk, so bila tanya nak pegi toilet ke tak, laju je dia geleng kepala. Ada sekali tu dia terkencing kat rumah sepupu Suami Terchenta, sebab aku bebel kat Suami Terchenta yang suka pakaikan dia pampers, penat je aku ajar dia kencing kat toilet. So malam tu, Suami Terchenta pun tak pakaikan, sudahnya Khayla pun tak sedar dia tak pakai pampers dan terkencing...

Kat Bintulu pun aku sempat lagi sambung beraya. Kali ni aku pegi rumah kawan sekolah dulu. Memang kecoh la malam tu kami bercerita tentang kisah dulu-dulu, kawan-kawan dan di mana dieorang sekarang ni. Best sangat raya kali ni dapat berjumpa kawan-kawan sekolah dari sekolah rendah sampai sekolah menengah dulu! Sekarang masing-masing dah beranak-pinak, tapi malam tu aku la yang paling ramai anak sebab kawan baik aku, Hester dan kawan rapat masa sekolah rendah, Jessica, masing-masing baru ada satu 'handbag' (kawan kami Asma yang gelar junior kami handbag. Hehe).

Fuh. Tak sangka panjang-lebar pulak entri raya aku tahun ni. Kesimpulannya, memang rasa seronok sangat, walaupun persiapan raya kami sederhana je. Yang penting masa yang diluangkan dengan kaum keluarga dan sahabat-handai :) Betul tak?

And We Meet Again!

About half a year ago, at 12 midnight to be exact, I made a few resolutions I called the 'FUN YEAR LIST'. In that list, I promised myself that I would spend more time with friends outside work - because everything this year is not going to be about work.

Over the past few months somehow things were unexpectedly hectic so there was not much opportunity for me to kickstart this revolution. But when you have friends like Kak Retna and Sis Lin who are willing to make things happen, it doesn't take much longer to finally nail down the date, time and venue of another of our awesome event.

I count myself lucky because we have friends whom I considered as very good chums, the kind that comes charging into your life with drums and trumpets and firework - and just make your life feels a lot more awesome than usual.

We used to have annual activities like going camping together, breaking fast or simply bonding over karaoke sessions. Since some of them stay in JB, we would go down to JB or they would come up to KL for these get-together sessions. However, lately things seems to have quietened down a bit so I decided that it was the perfect opportunity to have the first gathering this year over lunch.

Over Whatsapp messages, we discussed the date, time and menu for the day. Finally the lunch event took place yesterday.

It was a potluck luncheon so everyone got to bring their own favourite dishes - we as the host prepared laksa Sarawak (our specialty), our friends Romzi & his wife Amai brought garlic bread & mushroom soup, Shai & wife Nazuha prepared spaghetti bolognese, Umie & hubby turned up with maggi goreng, Kak CT & CM, daughter Lily & their 3 boys chipped in marble bread pudding & fried meehoon, Topek brought bread and Sambalava, Sis Lin came bringing 'kuih deram' & 'buah mata kucing', Kiki provided sweet melons for starter, and last but not least Kak Ret sponsored bottles of apple juice and a delicious tiramisu cake for dessert. Kak Diella, Sodep & Bro Ross came with their empty tummy, LOL!

Amai & Romzi turned up first, but unfortunately Mr Hubs forgot to take a photo of them holding the potluck lunch event poster. We only managed to snap these photos of them, including Kiki who came with her ultra-shy nephew, Umar & niece, Aishah. Sorry folks!

My girls had different reactions to getting a lot of guests in the house today. Khayla was basking in the overwhelming attention given to her and all the time she was singing happily and playing with Iman and Kak Ct's youngest boy. She was in high spirits the whole day and ate a lot of the food brought by our friends :)

Khadeeja on the other hand has developed separation anxiety, and was agitated at seeing so many new faces surrounding her. So most of the time people only get to hold her for a few minutes before handing her over to us. Everyone agreed that she looks a lot DIFFERENT than Khayla, and that she has such beautiful hair and huge eyes :)

Later in the evening after the two babies had gone to sleep we put on old videos of our previous events and the house was rocked with laughter as we reminisced the good ol' & funny days!

Feel so blessed to know these people and praying that our friendship will remain fast and steady for many more years to come (with lots more feasts like this in between, LOL!).

Ole-ole dari Bandung

Dah hampir seminggu aku tak berapa sihat. Demam selsema yang berjangkit daripada anak-anak yang dah menular ke aku, sekarang dah upgrade jadi batuk pulak. Perubahan cuaca yang kejap2 panas, kejap2 hujan pun menyumbang kepada faktor tak sihat ni. Hmm. Sabar je la, semoga penyakit ni menghapus dosa aku yang berkoyan-koyan ni!

Anyway, walaupun tak sihat aku gagahkan jugak pergi kelas sebab semalam ada presentation. Cuaca buruk menyebabkan aku terpaksa bawak sekali anak-anak ke UM sebab takut terlewat.

Presentation berjalan lancar walaupun aku terpaksa cut banyak point sebab tak nak markah kena potong. Lepas abis presentation aku mintak excuse nak balik awal dengan alasan tak sihat. Nasib baik lecturer ok je.

On the way balik tu, terperasan whatsapp Kak Ret pesan ambik brownies Kartikasari yang dia bawak dari Bandung. Dalam hati, I loike, I loike! Hehe. Even sebelum aku beranak lima bulan lepas aku teringin sangat nak brownies Kartikasari ni tapi takde pulak sapa2 yang pergi Bandung masa tu. Aku suka bangat (tetiba accent Indonesia pulak) brownies ni. Sedap dan ada lapisan flaky kat layer atas brownies yang sangat la heavennn!

So malam tu jugak aku pegi ambik brownies daripada Kak Ret. Ingat nak bayar harga brownies memandangkan aku pesan kat dia, tapi dia tak nak pulak, katanya memang dia plan nak bagi kat kawan-kawan pun :) Heee... Mesti lagi sedap bila orang kasi ^_^ Thanks Kak Ret!

Jenjalan di Sasana Kijang

Weekend lepas entah kenapa aku tetiba rajin. Rajin pergi kelas (itu terpaksa, sebab kelas ganti!). Rajin basuh baju, memasak, mop lantai, jaga anak, blablabla. Wah, isteri sapa la ni kan? *mata bersinar-sinar penuh bersemangat waja*

Untuk menambahkan tahap kerajinan minggu ni, aku rajin juga mengajak Kak Ret pergi berfoya-foya. Ecey. Takde la berfoya-foya tapi berjalan-jalan je. Ekceli, nak ajak shopping di Sogo sebab nak sambar cadar dan tuala mandi baru sempena kedatangan family aku minggu ni dan juga ada clearance sales.

Tapi alang-alang menyeluk pekasam, Kak Ret terus la mengajak pulak ke Sasana Kijang lepak-lepak di situ. So apa lagi, tak penah lagi jejak kaki ke situ walaupun sebelah dengan UM City Campus tempat menuntut ilmu. Lagipun En Suami Terchenta ada kuiz keesokannya, maka aku pun merasakan beliau perlu bersendirian supaya dapat konsentret belajar untuk kuiz itu. Wasey, bertuah tak En Junaidix dapat isteri cam aku? Hehehe *jeling En Suami Terchenta*

So melepak la kami berempat di Sasana Kijang. Eh, berempat? Siapakah dua orang lagi tu? Aku, Kak Ret dan...

Jeng3x! Tu dia... bakal pengantin yang diimport khas untuk menjaga anak aku, Khayla. Tengok la betapa suker nya Khayla duduk bersandar di pangkuan Uncle Shai yang empuk. AHAHAHAHAHA! Anyway, best jugak sekali-sekala spend weekend gi muzium. Banyak benda baru yang diperolehi. Khayla siap tertido-tido dalam baby sling sebab aircond yang dingin. Hehe. Apapun, thanks Kak Ret sebab belanja makan dan ajak kiteorang ke sini :) A different experience, tapi still tetap fun!
